Rotary encoder, also called a shaft encoder, is an electro-mechanical device that converts the angular position or motion of a shaft or axle to an analog or digital code.

Rotary encoder is an electromechanical device that converts mechanical positions i.e linear, rotary or angular to an electrical signal. This signal is analog or digital depending on the required output.

Rotary encoders can be used in all those applications where mechanical devices need to be monitor. Encoder is planted on the shaft or axle of the device which is moving so encoder will generate electrical signals. Different types of encoders are used for different signals output.
